How to obtain a certificate of authenticity for a painting or sculpture

In this article we will look at an example of how an artist or sculptor can obtain a certificate of authenticity for a work of art.

The first option is to make a certificate yourself

To do this, it is enough to take a beautiful, presentable photograph. For paintings, the photograph is cropped along the edge of the canvas or frame. For sculptures, the photograph should be against a prominent background so that the contours of the sculpture are clearly separated from the background.

The following attributes of the certificate of authenticity:

- last name and first name of the author;

- title of the work;

- year of creation;

- materials used (for paintings - canvas, oil, acrylic; for sculptures - bronze, marble, etc.);

- dimensions;

- description of the work, plot history, philosophy of the idea;

- biography of the author.

The author can place all this information on the certificate form, which can be found in the search engine.

The second option is to receive a certificate from the gallery

When collaborating with the gallery, it issues a certificate of authenticity in its own name on its own letterhead. It can be with the seal of the gallery, the signature of the gallery owner and/or with the signature of the author of the work. A certificate from the gallery indicates the cooperation of the gallery with the artist (sculptor), which somewhat increases the status of both the author and his work. This shows that the art dealer is in a partnership with the author, which means he is truly highly valued.

A certificate of authenticity is an important element for the sale of art objects. This document acts as a passport to a work of art. When the author or gallery sells art objects with certificates, buyers will remember the author’s last and first name, the name of the gallery, which will contribute to repeat sales.
