How to securely pack a painting for delivery abroad
In this article we will describe and show the process of packaging art objects (paintings, sculptures, graphics, icons) for sending abroad to Ukraine.
Frequent damage to parcels and cargo during international shipment:
- fall;
- damage to the packaging and the cargo itself;
- violation of integrity, etc.
While traveling hundreds of kilometers, the cargo (parcel) will inevitably be subject to many tests - it accidentally fell, was incorrectly fixed, and now the picture is damaged, cracked, and other troubles.
How to entrust your painting or sculpture to third parties for transportation (delivery)?
No carrier in the world can guarantee delivery (transportation) with 100% probability. Life is very unpredictable and consists of hundreds of thousands of factors. That is why it is important to take a responsible approach to the issue of sending and transporting art objects. Paintings and sculptures are of the highest value. Experts, connoisseurs and collectors highly value art and that is why there is such a reverent, scrupulous approach to this category of goods. When choosing a postal service or carrier, you should pay attention to the following factors:
1) Does this company have positive experience in the field of international delivery of art objects?
You can check this information using reviews on Google Maps, review sites, forums, videos on Youtube, and simply using Google Search. This minimal information will be enough to decide whether this company is worth checking further.
2) How many years has this company been engaged in this activity?
You can view information about a company that is engaged in such activities using a search engine, information collection services, and the website of the company itself.
3) Availability of cases (portfolios), photo and video reviews of customers
In the case of our gallery, we publish a report on delivery (transportation) with the permission of the customer. Here are some of our examples:
- Transportation of 100 paintings from Kyiv to Paris
- Sending paintings to the USA
- Transportation of a large porcelain sculpture from Kyiv to Austria
High-quality and functional packaging is the key to success
Packaging art requires a lot of experience in this field. From start to finish, the item must be preserved in its original form. Therefore, our masters, having received the painting and the sculpture in their hands, are already in a hurry to wrap it in bubble wrap.
In addition to safety, the packaging of art objects should have a presentable effect. After all, beautiful packaging speaks volumes about its valuable contents.
-
For packaging paintings and sculptures, we make boxes by hand, according to the size of the work, using the best materials:
- quiet paper (if the work is fresh, this paper does not stick to the work and leaves no marks, which cannot be said about plastic film);
- bubble wrap is a great option to add volume and protect against shock;
- 5-layer corrugated cardboard;
- dense foam - for shock absorption during shocks and falls;
- cardboard corners are stiffening ribs that serve as a frame.
-
If the item is very valuable, we make reinforced boxes from fiberboard sheets, OSB boards, plywood and wooden slats.
The third element of packaging is functionality. Since such cargo is subject to mandatory opening at customs checkpoints, it is necessary to provide for the possibility of third parties having access to such packaging. In other words, the packaging should be easy to close and open.
In the case of cardboard boxes, this is its “lid”. |
In the case of reinforced boxes - “door”, “lid” on hinges with latches. |
