Chalyi Nikolai Fedorovich - artist of socialist realism

We present the artworks of an outstanding teacher, associate professor, and long-time lecturer of the Lviv Academy of Arts - Chalogo Nikolaya Fedorovicha.

In the Ukrainian art Nicholas Fyodorovich occupies a prominent place as a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, the participant more than 70 exhibitions - in Ukraine and abroad, and associate professor (teacher) of the Lviv Academy of Arts (at that time - Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts), as well as - Lviv State College of Applied and Decorative Arts named after Trush.

He was born on September 14, 1913 in the Donetsk region in the village of Rai Alexandrovka, Slavyanskogo area in a large peasant family.

In 1924 - enters a rural incomplete high school, where his ability to draw was noticed. After graduating from 7th grade, he decides to continue his studies at the Art Institute.

In 1931-1938 he studied at the Art Institute (Odessa), which after the reform of higher education in 1934 became the Odessa College of Art. M. B. Grekov. Painting course was taught by Fraerman T.B., who studied in Paris and was acquainted with the artist Henri Mathis. Simultaneously with Chaly N.F. at a younger course studied G. Leonov, V. Lyubchik and I. Gutorov. In Odessa, he survived a famine, saved by the fact that the students were attached to the student kitchen.

In 1938, as one of the best graduates is directed to continue his studies at the Institute of the Academy of Art in Leningrad. But, due to his father's illness, he enters the Kiev Art Institute. In 1939 he enters the Kharkov Art Institute. Studied under Professor L.Y. Kramarenko, a famous muralist.

In the period 1941-1942, after graduating from three courses of the Institute, he was mobilized to the front and served in the rifle regiment.

From 1951-1954 years he works as a teacher at the Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (now - Lviv Academy of Arts). From 1954-1959 he was laid off and went to work in an art school, where he was head of the department of decorative painting, then deputy director for teaching. His students were Soyka, Flint, Markovich, Skandakov and others. 

In 1959, the new director of the Institute, Y.P. Zapascoy, invites Chaly to the teaching job. He begins to work at the department of drawing. From 1962-1971 years - working at the Art Institute in the post of deputy director for academic work (vice-rector). From 1971 - goes entirely to the teaching work, more time is given to creativity, which has always dreamed of. From 1974-1979 - appointed head of the department of drawing at Lviv Academy of Arts. 

On June 2, 1979 he married Olga Nikolayevna Chadko. Since 1984 - appointed Acting Professor of Drawing and Painting Department. In 1992 - joined the Union of Artists of Ukraine. 

Chalyi's paintings are kept in the Lviv Art Gallery, also in the Scientific and Artistic Foundation of Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky, in the National Museum in Lviv, and in private collections in Ukraine, Europe and the United States.
