Shipping a Painting Over 150 cm Abroad: Challenges and Solutions

Art is fragile and unique cargo, especially when it comes to transporting large paintings. Paintings over 150 cm create quite a few difficulties when sent by postal and courier services. The main problems are high rates and the restrictions of sorting centres. However, there is a way to cut shipping costs significantly while keeping the artwork intact. In this article, we explain how to ship oversized paintings abroad safely.

Why does shipping large paintings cost more?

Shipping large paintings requires a special approach. The problem is as follows:

High shipping rates. Postal and courier services charge extra fees for exceeding standard dimensions.

Sorting centre restrictions. Paintings of non-standard sizes often cannot go through automated handling, which increases the risk of damage.

Packing requirements. Packing large paintings properly takes more materials, which also increases the total cost.

How can you cut the cost of shipping large paintings?

One effective way to minimise costs is to take the painting off its stretcher and roll it up. This method reduces the dimensions of the shipment, which cuts the shipping cost by 2–3 times. However, it is important to understand that this approach has its risks:

  • Paint damage. When rolled, the canvas may crack or split, which will ruin the work.
  • Canvas deformation. Rolling it incorrectly can leave creases that are hard to fix.

To avoid such problems, we recommend turning to professionals who specialise in art shipping.

Tips for packing large paintings
  1. If the painting stays on its stretcher:
    • Use foam corner protectors to protect the frame.
    • Wrap the painting in bubble wrap.
    • Secure the packing in a rigid cardboard box.
  2. If the painting is taken off its stretcher:
    • Always roll the canvas with the painted side facing out.
    • Place acid-free paper between the layers of canvas to protect the paint.
    • Use a rigid tube to transport the roll.
