Three paintings by Winston Churchill are up for auction in Britain
On March 1, 2021, three paintings by Sir Winston Churchill, one of which is from the collection of Angelina Jolie, will be auctioned at the world-famous Christie's auction house.
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie decided to sell at Christie's auction a painting by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill - Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque.
This is the only painting Churchill completed during World War II from 1939 to 1945.
The drawing shows a 12th-century mosque in Marrakech, Morocco. At first, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave it as a gift to American President Franklin Roosevelt. However, after the death of the head of the White House in 1945, his son sold the painting.
It has since changed a large number of owners before it was bought by Anjolini Jolie and Brad Pitt in 2011. The painting is expected to sell for between $1.2-3.4 million.
Also, the same auction will feature paintings by W. Cherrill from other collections:
Let's keep an eye on the bidding. It is very interesting to see for what price the paintings of the legendary politician, Prime Minister of Great Britain and the man called "the greatest Briton in history" will be sold.
Churchill discovered his passion for art at the age of forty, and during his life he painted about five hundred pictures. This hobby helped him to get rid of depression, to forget about the problems of war and "big politics".
Winston painted both at home in Britain and on his many trips around the world. He painted both portraits and interiors, but he especially loved to take his easel out into the open air and paint landscapes.
The statesman was modest in his self-realization as an artist: he sent his work under an assumed name to an international exhibition in Paris, several of which were recognized by the jury. In 1925, again under an assumed name, he sent his work to the London exhibition of amateur artists: his picture won first place. In 1947, Churchill sent several works to the Royal Academy of Arts. As always, the works were signed with an assumed name. Much to Winston's surprise, two of his paintings were accepted. And already in 1948, he was granted the title of honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
In all, Winston Churchill was a painter for about half a century and painted more than five hundred pictures. As Winston Churchill himself put it, "When I go to heaven, the first million years I'll be painting.
