Professional painting restoration is an art
In the life of a painting there are different cases and one of them is damage to the canvas. In our services page under "Restoration of paintings" we have already described types of damage to paintings and frames. And in this article, we'll look at a specific example of how to restore a painting.
The painting is quite large, 160 x 80 cm, and from the photograph significant points have been noticed that require the attention of the restorer, viz:
- several holes in the canvas, one of which is directly in the artist's signature;
- leaks from spills of liquid or acid;
- dirt all over the canvas (the painting has not been washed or wiped down for several years), which makes the painting look dull;
- frame damage.
After a face-to-face inspection, the restorer counted eight holes and noticed other unpleasant things, such as severe craquelure and loss of the paint layer. All details were discussed with the customer and restoration work began. The entire work took two weeks:
- dismantling the frame;
- erection of the edges of the ruptures;
- local reinforcement of paintings in the places of ruptures;
- preparation of the edges at the rupture points for gluing;
- gluing and replenishing the losses of the canvas in the places of ruptures;
- local strengthening of the places of cracking of the paint layer (craquelure);
- laying the restoration ground in the places of losses of the author's painting;
- carrying out local tinting in places of losses of the author's painting;
- local coating with a thin protective layer of varnish.
- installation of the frame;
- frame restoration;
- installation of the suspension system for mounting on the wall;
- transportation to and from our workshop.
