Yugai Vladimir - Ukrainian artist

Yugay Vladimir (also - Yugai Volodymyr; 1922-1997) – a distinguished Soviet and Ukrainian painter, Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, whose oeuvre encompasses a wide range of thematic paintings imbued with the historical and social context of his time. His works are characterized by profound content and masterful execution.

Volodymyr Yuhay was born on December 29, 1922, in Vladivostok. He took his first steps in art at the Alma-Ata Art College, which he graduated from in 1945, where his mentor was the renowned artist A.M. Cherkassky. Striving for further refinement of his skills, Volodymyr studied at the painting faculty of the Kyiv State Art Institute from 1945 to 1951. Here, his talent was nurtured by such significant figures in Ukrainian painting as A.A. Shovkunenko and T.N. Yablonska.

Volodymyr Yuhay's debut as an artist took place in 1949 at the 10th Ukrainian Art Exhibition in Kyiv, where his works were displayed in the State Museum of Ukrainian Art and the State Museum of Russian Art. From that moment on, his creative work became an integral part of the artistic life of Ukraine and the Soviet Union, regularly exhibited at republican, all-Union, and international exhibitions.

Yuhay was a member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR and worked fruitfully in the field of easel painting, creating significant thematic canvases. Among his most famous works are historical and cultural compositions such as "Ira Aldridge with T.H. Shevchenko" (1954-1960), depicting the meeting of the great African American actor with the Ukrainian poet, genre paintings like "Leisure Time" (1958-1960), portrait sketches "Friendship. Ostap Vyshnya and M. Rylsky" (1971), as well as works reflecting the spirit of the times, for example, "Frontline Spring" (1975), "Into the Future" (1983), "Scorched Native Land" (1985), the religious and historical canvas "Saint Volodymyr" (1991), and lyrical landscapes "Chernihiv Region" (1993), "March" (1995), and others.

Recognition of Volodymyr Mykolayovych Yuhay's merits in the development of Ukrainian art came with the awarding of the honorary title "Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR" in 1976.

The legacy of Volodymyr Yuhay is represented in the collections of leading museums in Ukraine, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy Art Museums. His paintings are also held in numerous gallery and private collections in Ukraine, the USA, Canada, Germany, and other countries, testifying to the international recognition of his talent. Volodymyr Mykolayovych Yuhay passed away in 1997, leaving behind a significant contribution to Ukrainian painting.
