Sea Surf is a horizontal seascape with a low horizon and a tall sky. A cloudy sky unfolds above the dark sea, and in its centre a light golden glow breaks through the clouds. Closer to the viewer the water comes alive: waves with white crests roll across the whole width of the canvas. In the lower right corner, right at the edge of the surf, lies a small boat with foam breaking against its sides; it becomes the narrative and compositional focus of the scene. The diagonals of the clouds and waves converge on the bright patch near the horizon, so the viewer’s eye moves naturally from the boat into the depth of the picture.
The work is painted in oil with energetic, textured strokes. The sky is worked with long diagonal brush movements that convey the wind and the drifting clouds, while the waves are modelled with dense impasto touches and white highlights on the crests. A realist foundation is combined with an expressive, free manner close to expressionism. The artist’s signature is visible in the lower right corner of the canvas. The painting is presented in a gilded moulded frame with relief ornament and a light inner slip.
The colour scheme is built on the contrast between dark, deep water and a light sky. The sea is painted in indigo, emerald turquoise and dark blue, while the sky moves from blue and lilac at the edges to a warm lemon-yellow light in the centre. The reddish ochre hull of the boat adds a warm note to the cool palette. The mood is uneasy and yet hopeful: the storm has not yet calmed, but light is already breaking through the clouds. The white crests of the waves and the light sky are separated by a dark band of open sea, which gives the scene depth.
Nataliya Tomchuk seeks harmonious combinations of shades and smooth colour transitions, and among her sources of inspiration are the changeability of light and the elemental force of the sea. In 2025 she took part in the international exhibition of contemporary Ukrainian art Temporarily Here.
The painting is sold framed and ready to hang. The compact 40 × 30 cm format suits a living room, study, library or office, where the sea theme and deep blue tones create a sense of space and focus. The work looks good in classic interiors, next to dark wood and leather. It is a fine gift for a man who loves the sea and sailing, as well as for a business partner or colleague. The frame with its relief ornament supports the warm tones of the boat and emphasises the classic character of the marine subject.
