Sunset at Sea is a vertical seascape in which most of the canvas is given to the sky. The horizon runs slightly below the middle, separating the open expanse of water from the tall, cloudy sky. A large cloud of unusual shape rises in the centre of the composition, lit by the setting sun, with smaller wisps of cloud scattered around it. Below lies a calm sea with gentle ripples that catch the reflections of the sunset. The tall sky and narrow strip of water create a sense of space and depth despite the small size of the work.
The landscape is painted in oil on a realist foundation with an impressionistic freedom of brushwork. The sky is worked with soft, blended touches, while the clouds are built with denser, textured strokes that convey their volume. The water surface consists of long horizontal strokes that create a sense of slowly moving waves. The painting is presented in a gilded moulded frame with ornament and a light inner slip that gently separates the painting from the wall. The painted surface keeps the traces of the brush, so the sky and water look alive and in motion.
The palette is restrained and light. The blue and grey-blue sky turns into a band of peach, pink and golden orange near the horizon. The warm ochre tones of the cloud echo the reflections on the water, while the slate-grey sea balances them with coolness. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative: it is the moment when the sun has already set, yet the sky still holds its warmth. The reflections on the water line up into a soft path that leads the eye from the foreground to the horizon.
Seascapes hold a special place in the work of Nataliya Tomchuk, revealing the changeability of the water surface and the interplay of sky and sea. The artist has taken part in exhibitions in Kyiv and Ternopil, including the exhibition Barvy Zhyttia (Colours of Life), held in Kyiv from 18 to 27 August 2023.
The work is already framed and ready to hang, which makes it a convenient gift. The small vertical format suits a bedroom, living room, hallway or study, and the pastel palette fits naturally into light interiors, including Scandinavian and classic styles. The painting will be a fine gift for someone who loves the sea and travel, and a reminder of calm summer evenings on the coast. The light slip and gilded moulding give the work a finished, festive look and spare the owner the need to choose a frame.
