Turkish Bananas is an intimate still life that gives all its attention to a single subject. The elongated horizontal canvas shows a bunch of four ripe bananas lying diagonally from the upper right corner towards the lower left. The fruits meet at a shared green-brown stem, while their rounded tips face the viewer. The bunch occupies the centre of the canvas, surrounded by open dark space that lets the form read clearly and compactly. The concise arrangement, free of unnecessary detail, turns an everyday fruit into an independent artistic image.

The work is painted in oil in a realist manner with a noticeable painterly texture. The volume of the bananas is modelled with dense, impasto strokes that follow the curve of each fruit. Light highlights on the ridges of the peel alternate with warm shadows where the fruits press against one another. The background is painted freely with broad brush movements and visible strokes: it is not detailed and serves as a soft setting from which the subject emerges.

The colour scheme rests on the contrast between saturated yellow and deep wine red. The dark burgundy background, shading almost to black in the corners, intensifies the glow of the fruit, so the bananas seem lit by a warm, directed light. Orange and reddish reflections appear along the edges of the peel, tying the subject to its surroundings. The mood is calm and cosy, with a sense of a warm evening and an unhurried look at simple things. The canvas seems to radiate the warmth of a southern market, which the title of the work recalls.

Nataliya Tomchuk is a contemporary Ukrainian artist who received her higher art education at the Taras Shevchenko Kremenets Art and Pedagogical Academy, majoring in Fine Arts. In her practice she works mainly with oil paints and pays particular attention to surface texture, depth of the image and the relationship between colour shades.

The small horizontal format of 40 × 20 cm allows the painting to be placed where a large work would not fit: above a dining table, on a kitchen wall, on a shelf or in a narrow space between windows. The warm palette goes well with wood, terracotta and interiors in warm tones. The work makes an original gift for lovers of still life and for anyone who appreciates painting with character, as well as a pleasant gesture for a colleague or partner. The painting also works well alongside other small still lifes, forming a cosy arrangement on the wall.
