"Peonies on Blue" is a square still life in which a bouquet of peonies fills almost the entire canvas. The flowers open in different directions: a large white-and-pink peony at the lower left, next to it a pale flower with a crimson centre, above them a snow-white peony and a group of soft pink ones on the right. Green umbels and round seed heads rise between them, while thin ears of grass with yellow-green plumes and several tight pink buds stick out at the edges of the bouquet. Below, dark leaves spread in a wide fan, and a clear vase can be made out beneath them. The square format keeps the composition balanced: the bouquet is turned towards the viewer like an open gesture. At the same time, the artist leaves enough air around the flowers, and the blue background shows through between the stems, tying all parts of the bouquet into a single whole.
The work is painted in oils, with the main forms laid in with a palette knife. The peony petals are built from broad, flat slabs of light paint applied with pressure, leaving thin ridges along the edges. The umbels and plumes, by contrast, are painted with light dotted touches and fine lines, which makes the bouquet look airy. The background is worked with sweeping vertical movements of the knife: blue layers overlap, leaving glimpses of deeper blue and white, and in places small red and coral spots and drips are scattered across the surface. The artist's monogram with the date "26" is in the lower right corner.
The main colour of the painting is a clear sky blue, ranging from light azure to rich cobalt. Against this cool background the white and pink peonies look especially light, while the dark green of the leaves gives the bouquet support and weight. Rare red accents in the background echo the crimson centres of the flowers and keep the palette from turning cold. The mood is bright, summery and cheerful, with the freshness of morning and the feeling of a clear sky above a garden. On the sunlit side the pale petals are painted in almost pure white, while in shadow they take on a pinkish-lilac tint, and this transition gives the flowers volume without harsh shadows.
Anna Dub is a Ukrainian painter and the founder of the RAFINAD art studio, where she teaches painting and helps students develop their sense of colour and composition. In her own work she explores the interaction of colour, form, light and texture, turning to natural motifs as a way of conveying emotional states. The palette knife, layered painting and impasto are her constant working methods.
The 80 × 80 cm format suits walls of medium width: above a console in the hallway, above the dining table in an open-plan kitchen and living room, or above a desk in a home study. The blue background works well in light interiors with white, grey or sand-coloured walls, as well as in Scandinavian or Mediterranean-style spaces. Its bright yet gentle palette makes the painting a lovely gift for a woman — for a birthday, a housewarming or simply as a reminder of summer.
