"Peonies and Lupine" is a horizontal still life with a lush summer bouquet in a glass vase. The bouquet fills almost the entire width of the canvas and opens like a fan: a large pink peony on the left, two white ones with creamy centres in the middle and on the right, and between them a lilac-pink flower and two deep wine-coloured blooms. Coral lupine spikes weave into the bouquet in short clusters, and above it a lilac flower on a long curved stem stretches towards the right edge. Below, the dark stems and leaves show through the clear glass of the vase, and next to the white peony there are round, fluffy heads resembling seed heads. The composition is shifted slightly to the left, and the open light space on the right lets the bouquet "breathe".
The work is painted in oils with extensive use of the palette knife. The peonies are sculpted with broad impasto strokes: the white petals are laid on thickly, with folds of paint, while in the pink flower the layers overlap one another, creating a sense of volume. The dark burgundy flowers are painted more densely and smoothly, the leaves with sharp, sabre-like movements of the knife. The background is worked with vertical drags and scratched lines; in places the paint is scraped back to the lower layers, revealing lilac and ochre underpainting. The artist's signature with the date "26" is in the lower right corner. Thanks to the varying density of the paint, the flowers seem to step forward while the background recedes, even though the picture has no linear perspective.
The background divides the canvas into two tones: the left side is deep graphite-olive, the right side warm honey-gold with lilac streaks. The bouquet stands where these zones meet, so its colours sound different on each side: the white peonies glow against the dark, while the wine and pink shades grow richer against the gold. The green of the leaves mixes emerald, turquoise and grey-green. The overall mood is warm and slightly nostalgic, like the memory of an early summer evening when soft sunset light still falls into the room. The contrast between dark and light is not abrupt but gradual: the tones flow into one another through translucent lilac layers.
Anna Dub is a Ukrainian artist who works mainly in oil and acrylic, often using the palette knife, layered paint application and impasto. Flowers, fruit and other natural forms are central to her painting: she seeks not to reproduce an object precisely but to reveal its emotional content. Her works are distinguished by a rich palette and decorative plasticity.
The large horizontal 120 × 100 cm format is meant for a spacious wall: above a sofa in the living room, above a chest of drawers in the dining room or above the headboard in a bedroom. The combination of golden, graphite and pink shades will be well supported by interiors in warm beige, sand or olive tones, as well as by dark wood furniture. The painting will make a generous gift for a woman who loves peonies and textured painting, or for a family settling into a new home.
