"When Winter Meets Spring" is a square abstract composition built from horizontal bands and blocks of colour. The upper part is taken up by a deep turquoise-blue field resembling a cold sky or water. Below it stretches a light mint-turquoise band, then a dark, almost black one, then a raspberry-pink one, and a bright white-cream ribbon runs across the full width of the canvas — like a strip of the last snow or a flash of spring light. The lower half is assembled from large rectangles: a brick-red block on the left, a massive dark plane on the right, beneath them a pink-orange field, a small bluish-white rectangle in the lower left corner and vertical turquoise-green shapes with red accents on the right. Together they read as an abstract landscape: a horizon, sky, snow and thawed earth, seen as if in motion.

The work is painted in oil on canvas, densely and with heavy impasto. The paint is laid in broad horizontal drags that leave raised ridges and uneven edges, and in places the lower layers show through the upper ones — turquoise under pink, red under dark. As a result, each band seems not flat but layered and vibrating. The borders between the blocks are not perfectly straight; they are slightly ragged and alive, like the marks of a knife or spatula in fresh paint. The texture is especially visible under side lighting: highlights appear on the ridges of paint and the surface comes to life.

The colour structure of the painting is built on the clash of cold and warmth. Turquoise, blue and white tones convey winter — clear, ringing, still icy. Pink, raspberry, terracotta and orange stand for spring, warmth and the awakening of the earth. The dark, almost black planes act as shadows and intensify the brightness of neighbouring colours. The mood of the work is tense and joyful at once: a moment of transition, when the cold has not yet retreated but warmth is already breaking through. The white ribbon in the middle of the canvas serves as the border between the two seasons and at the same time as the lightest spot in the painting, to which the eye keeps returning.

Oleksandr Yatsenko is a contemporary Ukrainian painter, born in 1980 in Cherkasy, who lives and works in Kyiv and graduated from the painting faculty of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. His work includes abstract compositions and fantastic landscapes, and his personal style is built on expressive, textured surfaces. The artist explores the connection between humans and nature, and the change of seasons is a natural part of this theme.

The square 85 × 85 cm format makes the painting versatile: it looks good above a chest of drawers or a console, above a sofa in a small living room, in a bedroom or in a study. The turquoise shades are easy to echo with textiles — cushions, a throw, armchair upholstery — while light walls will give the rich colours more air. The work suits both a contemporary interior and a calm classic setting, where it will play the role of a bright accent. It is a good gift for a woman or a man born in late winter or early spring, or simply for someone who loves expressive abstract painting.
