Hummingbird is a vertical composition in which a recognisable image dissolves into movement. The canvas is filled with large curving forms that resemble feathers, petals and a whirlwind all at once: pink-crimson, green and blue-violet strands burst from the left side, curl and scatter to the right and downward as if caught by a rush of air. At the top the forms recede into turquoise space, while on the right a light area opens up with peach and golden reflections. The title offers a key to the work: it conveys not so much the look of a bird as the sensation of swift flight, fluttering wings and shimmering plumage.

The work is painted in oil on canvas. Each form is built from many short parallel strokes that follow the curves of the "feathers" and create a vibrating, iridescent surface. The paint is applied thickly, with pronounced texture; the outlines of individual elements are emphasised with dark blue and violet lines, giving the image decorative clarity. In the lighter areas of the background the strokes become smaller and are laid down almost as dots.

The colour scheme is bright and festive: crimson, pink, juicy lime green, emerald, turquoise and blue-violet blend into a lively shimmering stream. The light peach and golden areas on the right balance the saturated colours and add air. The atmosphere of the painting is energetic and joyful, full of light and movement.

Oleksandr Yatsenko is a contemporary Ukrainian painter born in Cherkasy in 1980. He graduated from the T. H. Shevchenko Republican Art Secondary School and then from the painting faculty of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Animals, plants and sea creatures often appear in his works, turning into complex decorative structures on the border between a recognisable image and a symbol.

At 100 × 145 cm, the painting stands out even in a spacious living room or a hallway with high ceilings; the vertical format works well above a sofa, a console or in a narrow wall space. The multicoloured palette easily finds an echo in the interior: it can be supported by cushions and decor in pink, green and turquoise tones, or the painting can be left as the only bright accent on a light wall.
