"Steppes" is a wide landscape in which open space itself becomes the main character. About a quarter of the canvas is taken up by a pale lilac-grey sky; beneath it runs a chain of soft blue hills, and a lone small tree darkens on a distant slope to the left. Lower down, a rolling steppe plain unfolds: light sun-bleached fields alternating with lilac and pinkish bands. From the lower left corner a green ridge of grass runs into the distance, dotted with lilac flower spikes and small white and yellow flowers, while on the right in the foreground the wind lays silvery strands of grass resembling feather grass along the ground. This diagonal confidently leads the eye from the edge of the painting to the horizon.
The work is painted in thick impasto with palette knife and brush, in a free plein air manner. The distant fields are laid in broad horizontal slabs of paint that show the direction of every movement of the tool, while the foreground grasses are rendered with long curved strokes that convey how they bend in the wind. The lilac flower spikes are modelled with dense vertical strokes and stand noticeably proud of the surface. Close-up details clearly reveal the relief of the paint layer and, in places, the weave of the canvas. In the lower left corner is the artist's signature with the date: Yehor Dulin 26.
The palette is light and airy: silvery white, pale yellow and blue tones of the fields combine with the lilac sky and hills, while the juicy green and saturated violet of the flower spikes give the foreground strength and depth. Warm ochre and orange touches in the grass warm up the overall cool harmony. The light is even and diffused, as on a hot summer day when the steppe is bleached almost white and the far hills dissolve in haze. The painting conveys a feeling of freedom, wind and silence.
Landscape is one of Yegor Dulin's strongest genres: in 2024 his painting "Alps" appeared in the film "12" by Warner Bros studio, and his painting "Mountains" was acquired by Samsung and presented in the Samsung Art Store. The artist took part in the international plein air "Italy 2019" and many other plein air events.
At 90 × 70 cm, "Steppes" is a substantial work that can become the centrepiece of a spacious living room, hall, study or meeting room. Its calm light palette with lilac and green accents suits contemporary interiors in grey, beige and white, Provence style and minimalism. The painting is shipped rolled in a tube, without a stretcher, so it can be delivered to any country conveniently and then stretched and framed on site. A fine gift for a man who loves travel and nature, and for a business partner or colleague.
