In "Irises in the Garden" Yegor Dulin presents a lush clump of irises in close-up, as if the viewer had crouched down beside the flower bed. On the left a dense bush rises upward with dozens of blue and lilac blooms, while on the right large open flowers with heavy, drooping petals come forward to the front edge. Long sword-shaped leaves fan out from the ground and cut across the canvas in diagonals, giving the composition its movement. Behind the flowers a garden can be made out: a strip of grass on the left, a warm sandy path below and a bright lime-green wooden structure on the right that resembles a garden bench, its horizontal planes forming a rhythmic backdrop for the vertical stems.
The work is painted in the plein-air manner typical of the artist: the paint is laid on thickly, in full-bodied impasto, with short, springy strokes. Each petal is sculpted in a few movements — white, ultramarine, pink and lavender sit side by side without fully blending, and the detail photos clearly show the raised texture. Many forms are outlined in dark blue, which gives the flowers and leaves a graphic crispness and links the painting to the post-impressionist tradition. In the foliage and on the ground the stroke becomes longer and looser. In the lower left corner is the artist's signature "Yehor Dulin" and the date "26".
The palette rests on the pairing of cool blue-violet blossoms with juicy turquoise and emerald greens. Pink accents in the hearts of the flowers and occasional orange touches on the petals enliven the cool range, while the acid-lime bench adds a ringing summery note. The sky above the garden is painted in a muted lilac-grey, so the flowers seem to glow against it. The mood is that of a fresh day at the end of spring, when the irises have just opened and the whole garden is full of colour.
Yegor Dulin is a Ukrainian painter and a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine since 2010. His academic training lasted more than ten years: an art school, a college and an institute of culture and arts specialising in easel painting, the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, and a master's degree from the H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (2011).
At 80 × 70 cm, close to a square, the painting becomes a self-sufficient focal point on a wall: it looks good above a sofa in the living room, above a chest of drawers in the bedroom or in a spacious hallway. The blue-green palette pairs easily with light walls, natural wood and textiles in blue and olive shades. "Irises in the Garden" is a warm gift for a woman who loves flowers and her own garden, and a fine choice for anyone who wants to keep the feeling of summer at home all year round.
