The painting "Gold of the Carpathians" is an autumn mountain landscape built from large masses of colour. Mountain ridges tower along the entire horizon: their peaks blaze orange and red, their slopes recede into lilac and blue shadows, and between them, in the distance, white clouds gleam. In the centre and on the right rise tall trees in golden-yellow autumn foliage, with dark green firs and cypress-like silhouettes beside them. The lower part of the composition is taken up by a wide valley with turquoise bushes and gently sloping strips of fields, through which a road winds like a pale ribbon. The space reads easily and freely from the foreground to the distant peaks.

The work is executed in acrylic on hardboard in an expressive, decorative manner. The artist does not draw details but builds the landscape from generalised planes of colour, broad strokes and impasto areas of paint in which brush marks are visible. The forms of mountains and trees are simplified and rhythmically repeated, turning the motif observed from nature into a colour composition close to modernist painting. In places the texture is raised, especially in the clouds and tree crowns. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner.

The colour scheme sounds festive and resonant. The golden-yellow and orange tones of the autumn foliage sit next to cool lilac, ultramarine and turquoise shadows, and above it all stretches a bright blue sky. This bold combination of warm and cool colours conveys the clear air of a sunny autumn day in the mountains, when nature's colours become especially rich. The title precisely reflects the main mood of the work — the feeling of the generous Carpathian gold of autumn.

Orest Tsyupko was born in 1963 in Lviv; he is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and lives and works in the town of Khust in the Zakarpattia region. In 1989 he graduated from the Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, where he studied in the ceramics department. In 2007 the artist organised and led the international painting plein air "Khust-Art", and landscapes that convey the atmosphere of the surrounding world through harmonious colour combinations hold a special place in his work.

The horizontal 70 by 50 centimetre format is well suited to a living room, study, office or country house. This vivid Carpathian landscape will become the main colour accent in an interior with neutral walls and natural wood furniture, and in the autumn and winter season it will bring back memories of sunshine and mountain trips.
