The painting "Quiet Harbour" depicts a calm sea bay on a clear summer day. Almost the entire lower half of the canvas is given over to transparent water, through which dark stones on the seabed and sunlit reflections, lying like a net over the shallows, can be seen in the foreground. In the left part of the composition a white sailing boat with a tall mast lies at anchor, and a little further away, in the centre, there is another small vessel. On the right, a rocky headland covered with greenery descends to the water, and blue mountains rise in the distance. Above the bay stretches a blue sky with light cumulus clouds.
The work is painted in oil on canvas in an Impressionist manner. The artist's main aim is to convey light and the transparency of water: the ripples on the surface are rendered with short light strokes and winding lines, through which the depth and outlines of underwater stones emerge. The clouds are painted with soft, dense strokes, while the boat and mast are drawn a little more precisely than the surrounding landscape and serve as an anchor for the eye. The small size of the canvas does not diminish the sense of space: the high horizon line and the wide expanse of water create depth. The artist's monogram is in the lower right corner.
The colour scheme is built on fresh shades of turquoise, emerald green, sky blue and white. Closer to the shore the water becomes greenish and transparent, towards the horizon a deep blue, and the sky with its clouds adds lightness and air to the painting. Warm ochre notes on the rocks of the headland and reddish details of the boat enliven the cool palette. The painting breathes calm, sunshine and the stillness of a summer morning by the sea, fully living up to its title.
Pavel Gustov received his initial art education at the children's art school in Khmelnytskyi and then studied at the Kosiv Technical School of Folk Art Crafts. The aesthetics and philosophy of classical Impressionism had a significant influence on his painting: the artist is interested in the changeability of natural light and the interplay of colour shades. In his works he seeks to convey not only the appearance of a landscape but also the emotional atmosphere of a particular moment.
The small 30 by 40 centimetre format allows the painting to be placed in almost any interior: a bedroom, hallway, kitchen, study, or paired with other seascapes in a gallery-style arrangement. The light turquoise palette is especially harmonious in Scandinavian, Mediterranean or nautical-style interiors. "Quiet Harbour" will make a pleasant gift for someone who loves the sea, travel and yachts — for a man or a woman alike.
