The painting "Mystery" is an expressive close-up portrait of a woman in a vertical format. The young woman's face is shifted towards the right edge of the canvas and slightly tilted; her gaze, from beneath half-lowered eyelids, is directed to the side, and her lips are slightly parted. Long dark hair falls across her face and fills the entire left half of the composition with broad strands, while below, the neck and a shoulder with a thin strap are revealed. The artist neither shows the heroine in full nor lets her look directly at the viewer — hence the title: the image retains an understatement that invites the viewer to unravel it.
The work is painted in oil on canvas in a free, expressive manner. The strands of hair are rendered with long, dynamic strokes that curl and scatter, while the face is modelled with short impasto touches of the brush, through which the texture of the canvas shows in places. Instead of conventional flesh tones, the artist uses coloured shadows: turquoise and violet accents lie on the nose, lips and cheekbones, turning the portrait into a colour improvisation. At the same time, the facial features remain precise and recognisable. The artist's monogram is in the lower right corner.
The colour scheme combines deep violet, blue and turquoise with warm ochre and cream skin tones. The cool colours of the hair and background envelop the heroine, while her light face and shoulder emerge from them as if lit by a soft light. The painting sounds bright but not harsh: it holds sensuality, thoughtfulness and a touch of melancholy. Colour here conveys not so much appearance as the mood and inner state of the model. Every viewer can read something of their own in this image.
Pavel Gustov was born in 1971 and has worked as a painter in Khmelnytskyi for more than thirty years. The main directions of his work are Impressionism, Expressionism and abstract painting; alongside landscapes he turns to portraiture, exploring the expressive possibilities of colour and form. Using brush and palette knife, the artist creates expressive texture, combining a free stroke, rich colour and dynamic composition.
The 50 by 70 centimetre format suits a bedroom, living room, study or studio in a contemporary style. The portrait looks especially good on a light or grey wall, where its blue-violet palette becomes the main colour accent, as well as next to furniture and textiles in cool shades. "Mystery" will make an original gift for a lover of contemporary painting — for both a man and a woman who appreciate an emotional, expressive manner of painting.
