The painting "Surf" is a wide horizontal seascape in which the viewer seems to stand at the very edge of the water. In the foreground, turquoise waves with white crests roll onto the shore and break against large boulders covered with a greenish film of seaweed; spray and foam fly up over the rocks on the right. Further out the sea gradually calms, and near the horizon a white sailboat and several distant boats can be seen. On the right, the outline of a mountainous coast emerges through the haze, and a line of birds stretches above the water. The elongated 120 by 60 centimetre format emphasises the sense of space and the rhythm of the incoming waves.

The work is painted in oil on canvas using the author's own technique and is varnished; the edges of the stretcher are painted white, so the canvas looks neat even without a frame. The artist builds the image in dense layers and renders the wave crests and foam with lighter, impasto strokes, making the water feel mobile and transparent. The sky is treated with soft transitions, while the clouds are modelled as voluminous masses. The manner is close to realist marine painting with a romantic treatment of light. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner.

The colour scheme is built on the contrast between the cool turquoise of the sea and the warm golden-yellow glow of the sky. The sun breaking through the clouds leaves a bright path on the water, while violet and lilac clouds gather at the edges of the sky. This combination conveys changeable weather: the storm is passing and light opens up over the sea. The painting sounds bright and festive, holding both the energy of the elements and the calm of the distant horizon towards which the sailboat is heading.

German Medvetsky was born in 1967 in Odesa and received his art education at the Kyriak Kostandi Odesa Art School and the M. B. Grekov Odesa Art College. Marine compositions and images of sailing ships hold a significant place in his work. In his current practice the artist turns to a freer, expressive manner in which colour, light and texture become the main means of expression.

Thanks to its large horizontal format, the painting looks great above a sofa in a living room, in a spacious hall, a study or a meeting room. The seascape fills an interior with air and light and is especially fitting in rooms decorated in light, sandy or blue-turquoise tones, as well as in nautical-style interiors.
