"Melody of the Evening Surf" is a seascape at sunset. The sun hangs low over the horizon, just right of centre, laying a golden path across the water that runs all the way to the foreground. The sky takes up almost a third of the canvas and is filled with billowing clouds. At the centre of the composition is a tall turquoise wave with a white crest, about to break on the shore, with more breakers behind it. On the left, dark coastal rocks step down to the water, another rock sits at the lower right, and the sky and sun are reflected in the wet sand of the foreground.
The painting is executed in oils in a realistic manner with expressive texture. The foam on the crests is laid in dense, light strokes that stand up from the surface of the canvas, while the body of the water is built up in layers through which light shines. The clouds are painted softly, with smooth transitions, and the rocks more darkly and roughly, emphasising their weight and their contrast with the sea. The artist's monogram is in the lower right corner.
The colour scheme is a bold combination of warm and cool: orange, coral, pink and lilac tones of the evening sky are reflected in the water and on the sand, while the crest of the wave glows emerald and turquoise. Dark brown rocks balance the bright palette. The mood is romantic and solemn, like the last minutes of a sunny day by the sea, when the sound of the surf is especially clear.
Pavel Gustov is a Ukrainian artist from Khmelnytskyi with more than 30 years of creative experience. He works mainly in oil on canvas, using both brush and palette knife, and his painting has been shaped by the aesthetics and philosophy of classical Impressionism. He seeks to capture not only the visible appearance of a landscape but also the emotional atmosphere of a particular moment.
The 50 × 60 cm format suits a living room, bedroom or study. The warm sunset palette fills a room with light and looks especially good on neutral light walls — white, beige or grey. The painting will make a fine gift for a lover of the sea, for a man or a woman, or for a colleague dreaming of a holiday on the coast.
