"Surf" is a seascape in an elongated horizontal format. On the left, a tall column of white foam from a breaking wave rises above dark rocks; in the centre a translucent green breaker rolls in, and behind it a restless sea with white crests stretches to the horizon. In the foreground are wet stones with water cascading over them, and at the right edge of the canvas a few more boulders emerge from the foam. The composition is built on a diagonal: from the massive rocks on the left the eye glides towards the open sea and bright sky on the right.
The painting is executed in oils in a realistic manner. The artist carefully conveys the substance of each element: the dense, warm-toned rocks are painted with body colour and highlights on their wet faces; the foam and spray in light, semi-transparent strokes and glazes; the crest of the wave glows emerald as if light were passing through it. The sky is rendered with soft, blended transitions. The canvas is cotton, gallery-wrapped on a modular stretcher, with edges painted white and a matte varnish finish. The artist's signature and the date "2026" are in the lower right corner, and the work is also signed on the reverse.
The colour scheme combines emerald-turquoise water, snow-white foam and a pearly sky with pink, golden and lilac reflections. The dark brown rocks give the painting stability and contrast. The light is diffused, as it often is after a storm or in the early evening when the clouds begin to part. The mood is powerful and energetic yet fresh: you can almost hear the roar of the water and feel the salty wind.
German Medvetsky was born in 1967 in Odesa, received an academic art education and graduated with honours from the architecture faculty of the Odesa Civil Engineering Institute. Marine compositions and seascapes are one of the main directions of his work, and his architectural training gave him a particular attention to composition, space and proportion.
The elongated 85 × 50 cm format is well suited to hanging above a sofa in the living room, above a desk in a study or in a hallway. The fresh green-and-blue palette goes well with nautical and Scandinavian-style interiors and with white and grey walls. The painting will make a fine gift for a man, a lover of the sea and travel, or a business partner.
