"Still Life with Tulips" is a lavish square floral still life. A huge bouquet fills almost the entire canvas: a white lily opens at the centre, beside it a large peach-pink rose, while to the right and above are variegated parrot tulips with fringed petals, bluish-white irises, delicate pink roses and small wildflowers. Two balls of pale green hydrangea lie at the lower left, a blue vase can be made out beneath the bouquet, and bunches of green grapes and a few red berries are scattered across a stone tabletop. The bouquet unfolds from the centre in every direction, and the eye travels from one flower to the next.
The work is painted in oils in the classical manner of a formal still life, but with a lively, free brushstroke. The petals of the roses and lily are modelled in impasto layers with a clearly visible raised texture, while the small flowers and grasses are suggested with light, precise touches of the brush. The grapes are painted densely, with highlights that give them a sense of weight and coolness. The canvas is cotton, gallery-wrapped on a modular stretcher, with edges painted white and a matte varnish finish. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner and on the reverse.
The palette is rich and festive: coral, peach, pink and white blossoms glow against an almost black background, while blue irises, lilac sprays and green grapes add cooler notes. The dark background acts like velvet drapery — against it the colours look even more saturated, and the bouquet seems to come forward towards the viewer from the depths. The mood is ceremonial, generous and summery.
German Medvetsky is an Odesa artist with academic training: he studied at the Kyriak Kostandi Odesa Art School and the M. B. Grekov Art College, and also graduated from the architecture faculty of the Odesa Civil Engineering Institute. Formal still lifes and flowers are among the main directions of his work; his painting is distinguished by rich colour, dynamic brushwork and close attention to composition.
The square 60 × 60 cm format will suit a living room, dining room or a spot above a chest of drawers in the bedroom. The dark background and bright bouquet create a striking accent on a light wall and go well with classic interiors, wood and warm lighting. The painting will make a beautiful gift for a woman, a mother or any lover of floral still life.
