"Sunflowers in Emerald Light" is a vertical composition in which the flowers are not shown in a vase but seem to hang down into the frame from above. Heavy sunflower heads with drooping yellow petals run along the top edge of the canvas: a large bloom to the left of centre draws the eye with its dark heart, another opens near the left edge, and a third, turned sideways, bends down on the right. Between them are broad leaves painted in turquoise-green patches. The lower half of the canvas is given over to a deep blue background, down which yellow and greenish drips of paint run, as if continuing the movement of the wilting stems.

The painting is executed in oils in a free, expressive manner. The petals are laid in short curved strokes of thick paint, the leaves are built from flat patches of colour, and the background is handled in fluid layers with deliberate drips and spatters. This approach combines painterly modelling of form with an almost abstract play of texture: dense, raised paint at the top of the canvas and transparent, flowing paint below. The work is painted on cotton canvas with a gallery wrap on a modular stretcher; the edges are painted white and the surface is finished with matte varnish. The artist's signature is in the lower left corner and on the reverse.

The palette is built on the contrast of warm and cool: sunny yellow, ochre and orange petals ring out against emerald, turquoise and ultramarine tones. Here and there violet and lilac shades appear in the leaves and shadows, strengthening the sense of dim, diffused twilight. The mood is pensive and slightly dramatic — an image of late summer, when the flowers are already bowing to the ground yet still glow from within.

German Medvetsky is a contemporary Ukrainian artist from Odesa. He studied at the Kyriak Kostandi Odesa Art School and the M. B. Grekov Odesa Art College, and in 1991 graduated with honours from the architecture faculty of the Odesa Civil Engineering Institute. Still lifes and flowers hold an important place in his work, and in recent years he has increasingly turned to a freer, expressive manner in which colour, light and texture become the main means of expression.

At 50 × 60 cm, the painting fits easily into a living room, study or dining room, and the gallery wrap with white edges allows it to be hung without a frame. The deep blue-green palette with bright yellow accents looks good on light walls and in interiors with wood, dark textiles or metal. It will make a memorable gift for a lover of contemporary painting — a man, a woman or a colleague who appreciates expressive floral subjects.
