"Sunday Walk" is a vertical forest landscape filled with sunlight and colour. On the left, in the foreground, stands the mighty trunk of an old tree: its grey-turquoise bark curves at the base, turning into gnarled roots. In the centre and on the right three slender trunks reach for the sky, blue and slate-grey in the shade, while their crowns flare with bright lemon-yellow light, as if the sun has broken through the foliage. In the depth a green clearing opens up with a narrow strip of light meadow, and the foreground is taken up by stones and a path painted in pink, orange, terracotta and blue patches. There are no people in the painting — the title invites viewers to feel themselves part of an unhurried walk through this forest. The verticals of the trunks give the composition a slender rhythm, while the horizontal bands of the clearing and the path lead the eye into the depth of the landscape.
The work is painted in acrylic on canvas in a decorative, colourful manner. The artist builds the space from large planes of colour laid on with broad, dense strokes; the brush marks are clearly visible and set the rhythm of the whole surface. Colour here does not copy nature literally but intensifies it: shadows become ultramarine and violet, light becomes an almost neon yellow, the ground turns pink and coral. The trunks are outlined with energetic lines, and the crowns are built from juicy patches layered over one another. This kind of painting is close to the traditions of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. The artist's signature "Цюпко О" with the date "26" is in the lower right corner.
The palette is bright and rich: cobalt, ultramarine and violet in the shadows, emerald and mint green in the foliage, lemon yellow in the sunlit crowns, pink, coral and orange tones below. The contrast of cool blue and warm sunlight creates the feeling of a clear summer day. The mood of the painting is joyful, festive and light — an image of a day off, when there is no need to hurry and one can breathe the forest air and watch the light play in the leaves. Even the deep blue shadows are not gloomy here but cool and transparent, like forest air at a sunny noon.
Orest Tsyupko is a Ukrainian painter born in 1963 in Lviv who lives and works in Khust, Zakarpattia region. He is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, an organiser of international art projects and director of the Khust City Art Gallery. The vertical 50 × 60 cm format fits easily into a narrow wall section, hallway, living room or study. The bright palette makes the work a good accent in a light, neutral interior with white, grey or beige walls, while the blue and green tones echo textiles, plants and natural materials. The painting will make a cheerful gift for a man or a woman, a colleague or a friend who loves nature, walks and rich, sunny painting.
