"Autumn Mosaic" is a horizontal floral still life. Almost the entire canvas is taken up by a lush bouquet of stylised flowers that fans out from a narrow pale vase at the lower edge. The left side of the bouquet is a dense mass of dark blue and cobalt blooms, while the right side is lighter and airier: here lilac, violet and light blue flowers alternate with white ones, and thin bare twigs stretch between them. Each flower is turned into a polygon with a small dark or orange centre. The background is divided into calm grey planes, enlivened on the left by a strip of ochre, while rows of small light squares, like a fabric or wallpaper pattern, run along the bottom and the right. The heavy dark blue mass on the left and the light, sparse right side create a lively balance, and the eye naturally moves from dense colour to air.
The work is painted in acrylic on canvas in a decorative, geometric manner. The artist breaks the form into flat facets of colour, as if laying out the bouquet from pieces of smalt — hence the title. The outlines of individual blooms are accented with broken lines of yellow, orange and red that give the composition a lively zigzag rhythm. In places the paint is applied thickly, with visible brush marks and raised edges, and in others thinly and evenly, creating a play of textures. The dotted pattern of the background contrasts with the free strokes of the bouquet. The artist's signature "Цюпко О" with the date "25" is in the lower right corner.
The palette is built on resonant cool tones: cobalt, ultramarine, sky blue, lilac and lavender. Warm flashes of orange and yellow and the muted ochre of the background balance this cool chord and add a sunny note. Autumn is shown here not in its usual golden range but in a cool blue-violet one, recalling late autumn flowers and clear September days. The mood of the painting is fresh, lively and festive, and the light background fills it with air. White and grey pauses between the flowers keep the palette from becoming heavy and let each shade sound on its own, like a piece of glass in a stained-glass window.
Orest Tsyupko is a Ukrainian artist and a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine who lives and works in Khust, Zakarpattia region. In 2007 he organised and led the international painting plein air "Khust-Art", and since 2012 he has headed the Khust City Art Gallery. His easel painting combines elements of realism, Art Nouveau and symbolism, and still life, alongside landscape, is one of his constant genres.
The compact 60 × 50 cm format and the bright yet harmonious palette allow the painting to be hung in almost any room: a living room, kitchen, hallway or office. It looks especially good on white, grey and light beige walls in contemporary and Scandinavian interiors, where blue and lilac become the main colour accent. The painting will make a joyful gift for a woman, a colleague or a friend who loves flowers and contemporary decorative painting.
