"Joyful News" presents a Christmas nativity troupe in close-up: a tight group of carol singers stands on a snowy slope under a dark night sky. On the left is a mummer in a white mask with long curved horns and a grey beard, wearing a red coat decorated with stars. In the centre a shining star rises above their heads on a pole; beside it are a woman in a red headscarf, a singer in a tall red hat with his mouth wide open, and a man in a straw hat. On the right stands an angel with large pale blue wings, and in the foreground a boy in white bows his head thoughtfully. The figures are pressed into a dense mass, and the whole composition moves diagonally from the snowy hill on the left to the deep blue on the right.
The painting is executed in acrylic, freely and expressively. The artist models the forms with broad, energetic strokes and leaves the texture of the paint visible — especially in the white garments and the snowy slope, where thick impasto layers create a sense of relief. The faces are stylised, given a few expressive features emphasised by dark outlines. In small details — the stars on the coat, the ornaments on the hats, the nativity star — the brushwork becomes short and broken. The signature "Цюпко О." with the date "23" appears in the lower right corner.
The colour scheme rests on strong contrast: the deep ultramarine sky and the cold blue snow set off the hot reds, crimsons, purples and greens of the costumes. The white garments and the shining star act as centres of light around which all the action gathers. The mood is festive and lively: it feels as if the carollers are about to break into song, bringing people the joyful news of Christmas.
Orest Tsyupko was born in 1963 in Lviv and studied in the ceramics department of the Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts. He now lives in Khust, heads the Khust City Art Gallery and is a member of the folk creative association "Mytets Verkhovyny".
The 80 × 70 cm format, close to a square, makes the painting a self-sufficient accent on a living room, dining room or hallway wall. Its bright, contrasting palette looks especially striking against a light or grey background and will enliven a restrained contemporary interior. It makes a memorable Christmas gift for a friend, a colleague or a family that keeps holiday traditions alive.
