"In the Shade of Wisteria" is a vertical garden landscape. Almost the entire upper part of the canvas is taken up by the dense crown of a wisteria: its branches run diagonally from top to bottom, and long lilac flower clusters hang down in a cascade like a light curtain. On the right the foliage is lit by the sun and flares with pale lime green, while on the left it recedes into deep shade. Below, close to the ground, violet and yellow irises bloom among tall narrow leaves. Between the bright crown and the flowers in the foreground lies a dark, cool space — the very shade that gives the painting its title.
The work is painted in oils on linen canvas in an Impressionist manner. The wisteria leaves are rendered in short feathery strokes of varying lightness that merge into a shimmering mass of foliage; the flower clusters are built from vertical lilac and pinkish touches of the brush. The dark background is worked in thin drags through which the texture of the canvas shows, while the irises are painted more densely and broadly. The signature "O.P." is in the lower left corner.
The colour scheme rests on the contrast of light and shade: juicy lime and golden-green highlights on the sunlit foliage sit beside deep emerald, blue and almost black shadow tones. The lilac blossoms and yellow irises act as soft colour accents. The atmosphere is cool, quiet and slightly mysterious — a summer noon in the garden, when the shade beneath a tree is the best refuge from the heat.
Oksana Potemkina is a contemporary Ukrainian artist and a graduate of the Art and Graphics Faculty of Odesa Pedagogical University. Before devoting herself fully to painting, she spent ten years working in animation and art photography, and for the last ten years she has focused on easel oil painting on canvas. Her style is based on an Impressionist rendering of light and air, and landscape is one of the key genres of her work.
The canvas measures 40 × 60 cm, or 45 × 65 cm in its frame, so the painting is ready to hang. The vertical format is well suited to a narrow wall in a living room, bedroom or study, and the deep green palette with lilac accents goes well with classic and nature-inspired interiors, wood and warm light. It will make a lovely gift for a woman who loves flowers and gardens.
