Nosan Volodymyr - Ukrainian artist

Nosan Volodymyr (born June 10, 1970, Balakliia, Kharkiv region) — is a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, and educator, Honored Worker of Arts of Ukraine, and member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. He is a representative of the Kharkiv art school, and the author of easel paintings, graphic cycles, and book illustrations.

Nosan received his professional art education in Kharkiv. In 1992, he graduated from the Kharkiv State Art College, and in 1998 — from the Kharkiv Institute of Industrial Art, majoring in "Graphics". His teachers included Viktor Zvolsky, Viktor Hontarov, Volodymyr Syzykov, and Oleksandr Brahin. Of particular importance was the school of Viktor Hontarov — one of the prominent representatives of Ukrainian art in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries.

Volodymyr Nosan began his exhibition activity during his professional formation. Since the 1990s, he has participated in regional, all-Ukrainian, international, and foreign art exhibitions and plein airs. In 2003, the artist was admitted to the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, and in 2018 he was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Arts of Ukraine".

A significant part of Nosan's professional biography is devoted to teaching. Since 2000, he has been working at the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts. In 2021, he became an associate professor, and on the current page of the academy, he is listed as a professor and head of the Drawing Department. He teaches drawing, academic drawing, and synthesis of arts. Nosan is also a co-author of educational publications on plastic anatomy and participated in the preparation of fundamental art albums dedicated to the art of the Kharkiv and Slobozhanshchyna regions.

A separate area of his activity is book graphics. Since 2002, the artist has been collaborating with the publishing houses "Maidan" and "Folio". Among his well-known works are illustrations for the writings of Horace, Martial, and Lucian. Volodymyr Nosan also worked on the design of modern Ukrainian publications: for example, his name as an illustrator is recorded in the bibliographic collections of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine.

In painting and graphics, Nosan works with portrait, landscape, and thematic compositions. An important place in his work is occupied by the Ukrainian village, man and land, family memory, traditional ways of life, the road, and returning home. These themes can be traced back to his early series of lithographs "Peasant Universe" (1998) and are continued in the works "Holy Evening", "Farewell", "Going Home", "Refugees. In Search of a Better Destiny", "Between Two Worlds", "Father's Well", "Black Arable Land", "Old Apple Tree", "Life of Mary", and other works.

Nosan's artistic language was formed at the intersection of painting and graphic traditions. His works are characterized by generalized form, thoughtful compositional structure, expressive rhythm of silhouettes, and decorative work with color. The palette can vary from rich combinations to almost monochrome, built on complex muted shades. Art critic Olha Denysenko notes in his work the influence of Far Eastern and Ukrainian engraving, post-impressionism, Art Nouveau, and the "severe style" of the 1960s. Thanks to his graphic background, even Nosan's paintings often have a clear construction and recognizable plasticity.

In 2017, the artist's works were presented in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine at the exhibition "From Slobozhanshchyna to the Carpathian Mountains": the exposition included landscapes and lithographs from the "Peasant Universe" series. Nosan's personal exhibitions were also held in Sumy and Kharkiv. In 2021, he participated in the project "ATO-JFO through the eyes of contemporary artists" at the YermilovCentre in Kharkiv. In 2025, the Imagine Point gallery in Kyiv hosted the exhibition "Echo in Space", which brought together the works of Volodymyr Nosan and Oleksandr Serdiuk.

Volodymyr Nosan's works are represented not only in the exhibition market but also in institutional collections. According to the Kharkiv organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, his works are kept in the Kharkiv Art Museum, the P. D. Martynovych Krasnohrad Museum of Local Lore, the collection of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, as well as abroad — in the Columbia Center in Houston (USA), the Art Center in Kaohsiung, and the Hann Art Agency in Tainan (Taiwan).

Thus, Volodymyr Nosan's professional reputation is based on several objective components at once: academic art education, more than thirty years of exhibition practice, membership in the NUAU, a state honorary title, museum collections, international presence, personal exhibitions, and many years of teaching at a specialized art university. His works are of interest primarily as the creations of an established author with his own recognizable artistic system and a documented professional biography.
