The painting's packaging should ensure its safety and allow the customs services to open it for verification against the export documents. Photos of the packing process by ArtDom specialists:

1) First, we wrap the painting in bubble wrap (bubble wrap) in two layers

2) Wrap generously, on both sides

3) take a thick cardboard, it is light (saves on shipping costs, since the weight is also taken into account in shipping) and quality protection in transit

4) put a sheet of styrofoam cut to the size of the painting

5) we place the painting, which is already in bubble wrap, on the styrofoam sheet

6) an important part of the construction of the paintings are the corners of the frames and frames, so the corners necessarily put pieces of heavy foam rubber

7) put pieces of styrofoam in the openings around the perimeter of the painting

8) cover the second side of the paintings with a sheet of Styrofoam

9) "close" the package with a sheet of thick cardboard. Such a design will reliably protect your painting during shipping and deliver your painting in one piece. Also, such packaging will allow customs to temporarily open the parcel for checking the painting with the prepared documents to take the painting across the border.

Always happy to help and advise you on all questions.

1) The quality of packaging and materials must guarantee the integrity and preservation of the paintings.

Packaging must protect from falls, bumps, moisture, leaks, and other factors that can harm a work of art. Therefore, we pack the paintings tightly in polyethylene film, then bubble wrap, cover with layers of foam plastic and foam rubber. In some cases we use solid sheets of fiberboard and make a wooden frame.

2) Painting boxes should be easy to open and close.

An individual corrugated cardboard box is made for each painting, which resembles a pizza box. This design will allow customs to open the box, check it against the documents for export, close it back up, and maintain the integrity of the design.

Advantages of packing paintings from the gallery ArtDom:

✦ We have been making boxes and sending paintings abroad for over 10 years;

✦ Guarantee of safety of the paintings, the integrity of the package and prompt delivery;

✦ The experience gained allowed us to improve the design of the boxes and the technology for sending paintings;

✦ Our packaging is lightweight and the result is a low price for sending your painting by mail. Also, lightweight packaging is convenient if you are transporting the painting yourself. For example, if a painting weighs 2 kg, the total weight with the box is only 4 kg, which will greatly reduce your shipping cost, without losing the quality of the package;

✦ In some cases we add sheets of fiberboard and make a wooden frame to make the painting and canvas more secure. This will add a little weight, but will add to everyone's confidence in the quality of the painting's packaging and safety during transportation.

Our favorite column is frequent questions when shipping and sending paintings abroad:

1) Should I remove the painting from its frame before shipping it abroad?

If you send a painting in a frame - it will serve as a protective frame and will guarantee that the painting will arrive in one piece. Besides, you've already spent some money on decoration, or better yet, the frame was made by the artist himself. In this case you should leave the painting in its frame and send it for transportation in tranquility. It's also worth mentioning the high cost of painting framing abroad - if framing costs from $50 in Ukrainian painting framing shops, then, for example, in Europe, the prices start at around 300 euros.

2) Do I have to take the painting off the stretcher before sending it abroad?

As a rule, this question is relevant when the painting is a very large format. Indeed, sometimes this is the only budget option for sending a painting abroad. But we still recommend not to disturb the painting. When you take the painting off the stretcher, you deform the structure of the canvas, the paint layer, which will lead to the damage of the painting. Even if your painting is protected with several varnish layers, you'll need to have it stretched on a stretcher. Such services abroad can cost anything from 50 euros.

3) Can I roll up the painting and send it abroad in a tube?

Indeed, this will reduce the shipping cost of the painting, because you will reduce the volume of the parcel or save shipping space. But again, we recommend not to take the painting off the stretcher, and send it as is. The point of the painting is to be in pristine condition, without fractures, craquelure and other unpleasant nuances. We do quality packaging at an affordable price, so your painting is sure to arrive intact.

4) Can I use plywood when sending paintings abroad?

The first point is that the customs require phytosanitary regulations for its use. The second point - this material is not practical, it is very heavy, absorbs moisture and deforms depending on humidity. The large weight of the parcels is a significant increase in the cost of delivery. We use more practical materials which are lightweight and guarantee the preservation of the paintings. They are whole sheets of fiberboard according to the size of the painting, multi-layer corrugated cardboard and a wooden frame.

5) How do I get my artwork cleared, customs clearance for transportation across the border?

Each case requires an individual approach. It depends on the number of paintings, the country of importation and other factors. If you are transporting or sending paintings for personal purposes (transporting things, a gift), then indicate so in the customs documents. In this case, the recipient of the parcel or you at the entry will not pay "customs clearance", which sometimes reaches 20%.
