Attribution is a procedure in art that helps establish, identify, and confirm the authorship of an artwork. In other words, it is the determination of the authenticity of a painting (drawing, sculpture) and the identification of its creator. During the attribution process, the expert is guided by their own knowledge of a specific artist and the data provided by specialized equipment.

1) The expert compares existing signs of authorship—the signature, materials used (cardboard, wood panel, canvas, oil, tempera, etc.), and the age of the materials—and cross-references this with verified data about the artist (for example, with paintings by this artist held in museum collections). If the signature matches other works by the artist, if the use of oil and canvas is typical for them, and if the age of the materials aligns with the artist's active years, it is highly probable that the work is authentic and created by that specific artist.

2) To determine technical aspects, experts use specialized equipment: a spectrometer, a microscope, and a UV emitter.

Each expert specializes only in a specific artist. Occasionally, an expert may specialize in several artists. Accordingly, each expert has their own rates for attribution services (establishment / confirmation / identification of authorship). Additionally, the cost is calculated individually and depends on the following factors:

presence or absence of author signatures;
state of preservation (condition);
period of painting or creation of the artwork;
base materials;
artist's school, movement, and style.
