Restoration of paintings in the ArtDom workshop

We were sent photographs of a large painting depicting a beautiful forest landscape. For a detailed inspection, we saw many points that the restorer should pay attention to.

ArtDom Gallery cooperates with several restorers, leading experts and masters of their craft who have extensive experience and many recommendations in the field of art restoration, which we described in our section Restoration of art objects

After a preliminary inspection, the restorer said that he could help restore the painting, but warned about the long period of work - 3-4 weeks. This is due to several factors:

- a large number of losses of the paint layer;

- a thin layer of paint in some places, due to which the canvas was visible in places;

- stains from age (dust, dirt), drops of paint (probably from renovation work in the apartment);

- a large amount of craqueur (cracks in the paint layer);

- large area of the painting (size 150 x 120 cm).

First of all, the restorer removed the painting from the old stretcher, 1) to level the canvas and 2) to properly stretch the canvas onto a flat stretcher.

After leveling the canvas, the restorer stretched the canvas onto a working stretcher and began the process of “washing” (cleaning) the canvas from dirt and stains. Due to the large area of work, this took a long time, since it is a meticulous process that is done carefully, layer by layer. Gradually the picture began to brighten and play with new colors - the sky became blue and a play of light and color appeared.

After this, the restorer began glazing - applying a special translucent paint to fill voids and losses in the paint layer.

And after 4 weeks of painstaking work by the restorer, the painting was completely ready to give its enchanting beauty to the world around it.

Having learned that it was ready, the customer also asked for the painting to be framed, so we selected a wide, dark wooden frame to highlight it on the wall and emphasize the large format.

We were pleasantly surprised when we learned that the customer really liked the painting and wanted to “save” it from the destruction of time. Therefore, while working on this order, we were inspired by the “rescue” process and gave the art connoisseur the delight of purchasing the painting for the second time.

Upon receiving the painting, the customer immediately noticed that the painting had become lighter and more pleasant in color. There was no more dirt, stains or loss of paint. As they say, “the picture began to sparkle with new colors.” In the distance one could see either a dawn or a sunset, and the rays of the sun could be seen enveloping the forest landscape, and the overall picture was pleasing to the eye.
