- Overview
- Characteristics
Sanguine was a favorite medium of artists of the past. The term "sanguine" refers to a soft, reddish-brown, terracotta-colored material shaped like a stick. When used, it produces soft, colorful lines, allowing for strokes of varying intensity.
Sangini is characterized by:
- deep, intense colors;
- high lightfastness;
- velvet surface of the design.
When working, it can be wetted, thereby diversifying the thickness and depth of strokes, and easily erasing excess lines.
The tetrahedral shape of the stick is convenient: you can easily control the width and thickness of the stroke, its saturation and intensity, and your hands will stay clean.
The technique of working with these materials is characterized by a combination of broad strokes and shading with strokes of sharpened stones. Sanguine is often combined with black (Italian) pencil. On white paper, the combination of these materials produces shades close to skin tones.
