On Peter Boyko's canvas "Greece," a kaleidoscope of symbols and images unfolds, immersing the viewer in the world of ancient mythology and cultural heritage reinterpreted through the prism of contemporary art. The painting presents a multi-figure composition where human faces, body fragments, architectural elements, and natural motifs merge into a unified whole. Central to the piece are stylized heads whose eyes evoke an all-seeing deity and a profound inner gaze.
The figure of a horse alludes to the mythological steed Pegasus and ancient equestrian statues, symbolizing strength, nobility, and a connection to the past. Houses with triangular roofs resemble ancient temples or traditional structures, conveying a sense of rootedness and history. The depiction of a hand, seemingly emerging from the depths of the canvas, lends a mystical and mysterious quality to the work, possibly embodying creative genesis or divine intervention. The color palette, rich in ochre, golden, and earthy tones, imbues the painting with a sense of antiquity and warmth, interwoven with blue-green accents that symbolize the maritime expanses of Hellas. The painting style, with its impasto strokes and dynamic texture, enhances the feeling of archaism and simultaneously a modernist interpretation of classical motifs. The painting "Greece" is a reflection on time, culture, and eternal values.
Peter Boyko is a Ukrainian avant-garde artist. Born in Pryluky in 1954, he displayed a talent for drawing and a passion for collecting from childhood. In his youth, he belonged to the "hippie" movement. He traveled extensively and was repeatedly detained for "anti-Soviet" behavior. Due to his dissident views, he was sent to military service in the Arkhangelsk region, to a "stroybat" (construction battalion) logging camp.
He studied the art of painting for over 8 years. Thanks to his contribution to Ukrainian art, his name has been inscribed in the "Golden Fund of the Nation." His work is filled with the colors of life and offers a fresh perspective on familiar subjects. Petro Boiko's paintings are housed in many museums in Ukraine, as well as private collections in Ukraine, Germany, Israel, the Philippines, and the USA.
