Painting Untitled, artist Alexander Roitburd
- Overview
- Characteristics

A surreal composition where two faces merge into a single space. One face is shrouded in shadow, its features barely discernible, as if lost in its own thoughts. The right face, conversely, is bathed in bright light, its features sharply defined, with red accents on the eyes and lips adding expressiveness and even a hint of unease. A vibrant vertical stripe of light, simultaneously dividing and connecting the two figures, creates a sense of both separation and unity, highlighting an internal conflict or duality of nature.
The painting is executed in an expressive manner, using dense, textured brushstrokes that imbue the image with dynamism and emotional intensity. The color palette, predominantly consisting of earthy and muted tones, enhances the dramatic effect. This work belongs to the artist's early period, created in the 2000s when underground art was in vogue, and artists often explored various styles, including surrealism.
Oleksandr Roitburd (1961-2021) — a pivotal figure in Ukrainian contemporary art, whose contribution to cultural development is immense. He was not only a daring and intellectual artist but also a curator, public figure, and reformer of the Odesa Fine Arts Museum.
His work, imbued with irony and symbolism, served as a bridge between Ukrainian art and the global context. Roitburd's pieces deconstructed images from classical and contemporary culture, populating his canvases with transformed figures and fantastical creatures. He masterfully manipulated narratives, creating ironic statements about the paradoxes of modern life. Roitburd was an active public figure, co-founder of the "New Art" association, and director of the Odesa Fine Arts Museum, where he implemented significant reforms, dramatically increasing museum attendance and revenue. His legacy includes not only hundreds of unique artworks but also an example of selfless dedication to culture and his country.
